What is Speech Team?
Speech Team is a diocesan-sponsored activity in which any middle school student may participate. It provides a fun, relaxed environment for students to develop and receive constructive feedback on their presentation and public-speaking skills. Participation in Speech Team looks GREAT on high school applications. Additionally, it helps to build confidence and poise for activities like classroom presentations and future high school interviews.
Event Categories
Students who participate may choose to prepare a selection from one of 9 categories. They then perform that for judges and small audiences at any (or all!) of the 3 competitions that will be held this year.
Those even categories are the following:
Poetry Reading
Prose Reading
Humorous Interpretation (Monologue, Memorized)
Dramatic Interpretation (Monologue, Memorized))
Storytelling (Memorized)
Oratory (Memorized)
Duet Acting (2 People, Memorized)
TV Commercial (Up to 3 People, Memorized)
Two-Man Improvisation (2 People)
Please see the "documents" tab for detailed descriptions of each event category.
2019 Competition Dates
All meets will take place at JPII High School
Saturday, October 12th; 8 – 12; Festival-Style Meet
Saturday, December 7th; 8 – 3; FINAL Competitive Meet (with elimination rounds)
*Student may elect to participate in one OR both meets. Whatever works with their schedule!
Speech Team Practices
There will be morning, lunch/recess, and after school practices to prepare for these meets. Each student will have two practices prior to each meet and will be scheduled based on the coach's and student's availability.
Go STARS!
